Maine’s legal community can support the Campaign for Justice, a special effort to support legal aid organizations in Maine.
Upon turning age 70-1/2, one must begin withdrawing funds from certain retirement accounts according to IRS rules. Funds withdrawn from some types of retirement accounts are subject to state and federal income tax. Failure to withdraw the required amount can result in a 50 percent penalty on the funds not withdrawn.
The “IRA Charitable Rollover” (aka Qualified Charitable Distribution) allows a person age 70-1/2 or older to withdraw up to $100,000 from his or her retirement accounts and donate it to a nonprofit organization without incurring any income tax on the funds withdrawn.
Another option is to withdraw funds from the retirement account, pay the tax, and contribute the remaining funds to charity. This arrangement may result in a smaller gift to charity but may allow the donor to take a charitable income tax deduction.
Maine Equal Justice welcomes contributions from your Donor Advised Fund, established at Fidelity Charitable, Vanguard Charitable, Schwab Charitable, Maine Community Foundation, or others.

The Moxie Fund was created in Fall 2017 in honor of Chris Hastedt, Maine Equal Justice’s Co-founder, and Public Policy Director, to provide quality, effective direct assistance to people struggling to make ends meet AND to give someone who knows the challenges of poverty firsthand the opportunity to gain professional work experience and training in the field of legal advocacy.
People who have lived poverty know better than anyone else what the barriers are and what the solutions should look like. In that spirit, Maine Equal Justice has established the Moxie Fund and the Moxie Case Coach position.
The Maine Health Access Foundation (MeHAF) helped inspire the creation of the Moxie Fund when they named Chris as the first Dr. Wendy J. Wolf Health Leadership Award recipient in 2017. The award honored Chris’ exceptional leadership and achievements in promoting access to quality health care and improving the health of Maine people, particularly the uninsured and underserved. The award included a $10,000 grant to Maine Equal Justice that provided the seed money needed to create the Moxie Fund.
This opportunity will both strengthen the organization and provide valuable work and life experience to whomever holds the position. The Moxie Fund supports our Moxie Case Coach who provides direct legal assistance to people calling for help with public benefit programs.
