Maine people have said over and over that they want more affordable health care, not less.
Everyone needs access to comprehensive health care that includes dental coverage, mental health, and substance use disorder supports and services. Maine Equal Justice helped lead the first-in-the-nation fight to pass Medicaid expansion by ballot and oversaw the legal battle to enforce it. Mainers have expanded Medicaid as a commonsense step toward fixing our broken health care system. Working together across our many different backgrounds, we can advance new policy solutions to close the gaps that still exist in our health care system.
Health care is at the heart of so many changes we need to make to create real equity and opportunity in Maine. When Maine adults get care, more Maine kids do too, and whole families can be healthier generation to generation. There are many opportunities to use state dollars to bring more federal matching funds to our communities, and policies that encourage prevention over emergency treatment.
We will not stop until affordable health care a reality for ALL Mainers so that everyone can get the care they need when they need it. In the State Legislature or in Congress, we’ll advocate for solutions that recognize an individual’s right to coverage regardless of income, where they live or where they came from. Join with us to make sure everyone has the health care they need.
Maine is one of only 13 states that has no adult dental benefit in Medicaid, except for limited emergency care. When Mainers can’t afford to access basic oral health care, like cleanings and fillings, serious health issues develop, which endangers their health and makes care more expensive for everyone. In 2020, Maine Equal Justice is advocating for a bill that will allow Maine to draw on federal funds and provide comprehensive dental care for low-income adults through MaineCare.
