LD 1522, An Act to Establish the Maine Eviction Prevention Program (Factsheet)
Maine renters with modest incomes face impossible choices because of sky high rents. Fortunately, in 2024, Maine established the Eviction Prevention Program as a pilot to support households on the brink of losing their home. The program helped more than 1,200 households, protecting families, cities and towns from the harm of evictions and the housing crisis. This bill strengthens the program and provides funds to protect thousands more households.

LD 847, An Act to Prohibit Housing Discrimination
Many landlords refuse to rent to tenants who rely on housing supports such as Section 8, social security, veteran’s benefits, or General Assistance, making it harder for families with low income to secure homes in their communities, close to school and work. This bill restores protections under the Maine Human Rights Act for tenants who experience discrimination based on their source of income.

LD TBD, An Act to Offset Federal Cuts to Health Insurance for Families and Seniors
Last July, Congressional Republicans and President Trump pushed through H.R. 1, making sweeping cuts to Medicaid (MaineCare) and other critical resources. Mainers face new challenges accessing health care due to federal cuts to essential programs. This bill would allow access to Maine’s Rainy Day Fund to help mitigate harm to Mainers’ health caused by those cuts.

LD 2051, An Act to Ensure Access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in Maine
H.R.1, the budget bill passed July 2025, further restricted who can get food assistance and health insurance based only on immigration status. LD 2051 would clarify that state-funded food assistance continues to support lawfully present immigrant groups, as it has since 1997.

LD 1022, An Act to Protect and Increase Access to Justice in Civil Legal Matters for Persons with Low Incomes
Civil legal aid provides legal assistance to protect Mainers’ livelihoods, health, and families when they cannot afford an attorney. This bill would increase ongoing support for legal services across Maine. The current state budget provided funding for only the first state fiscal year. If these funds expire, Maine would see fewer civil legal services despite significant unmet need.

Bills to Advance Tribal Self-Determination
Restoring self-government to Wabanaki Nations is necessary for racial equity. We support bills that would implement consensus recommendations from a bipartisan task force convened by the Maine Legislature to address long-standing issues with the land claims act passed in 1980 that governs the relationship between the state and the tribes in Maine.
